Black People’s Response To Walmart Removing DEI Programs Is Laughable
Walmart is not the only place to start rolling back DEI programs, but a Black person’s approach to it should be realistic
Update as of 12/07/2024: I stand by all my words here, but I am happy to announce that on Black Friday, many Walmart stores had empty parking lots and in the comment sections of some social media posts, Black people actually mentioned a few alternative places where we can shop.
This article will not address the minute details of DEI’s past and present. I want to instead focus on the responses from Black people, then conclude with my own thoughts.
For the sake of this discussion, DEI stands for “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” — so Walmart is doing away with any programs and resources that involve training, recruitment, and resource networks in order to reflect a more “American image”.
This removal will affect Black people, people of color, and those who represent the LGBTQIA+ community (although I am not sure why sexuality is always lumped in with Black people).
Note: I understand that inclusivity programs includes EVERYONE, for sure. As a Black woman I’d rather programs focus solely on the Black experience. That’s all.
The idea here is that on the heels of conservative backlash, Walmart (and other stores) will be pulling these programs out.
